Guardians Chronicles est un jeu de miniatures sur le thème des super-héros dans lequel vous incarnez l'un des membres de la Liberty Patrol ou l'ennemi juré du groupe, le professeur Skarov.

Pour la mise en place, le joueur Skarov dispose les neuf tuiles recto-verso du plateau de jeu dans une grille 3x3, avec sa salle de contrôle dans l'espace central. Chaque joueur prend sa feuille de personnage, sa figurine et 7 à 10 cartes action. Ces personnages entrent dans la grille sur l'une des tuiles latérales et doivent avancer autour de la place – affrontant des serviteurs et des pièges en cours de route – afin d'atteindre les objectifs en place pour ce jeu, comme contrecarrer une attaque de missile nucléaire.

À chaque tour, les joueurs héros jouent 1 à 2 cartes d'action ; chaque carte montre à la fois un pouvoir spécial et des modificateurs aux statistiques inhérentes à ce héros – mouvement, attaque, défense et mental – et les cartes jouées peuvent être utilisées soit pour le pouvoir spécial, soit pour les modificateurs. Chaque joueur héros dispose de quatre actions au cours d'un tour, et les joueurs peuvent jouer dans l'ordre de leur choix ; les actions consistent à se déplacer à travers la base, à attaquer un ennemi ou à utiliser un pouvoir spécial sur une carte d'action jouée ou sur la feuille de personnage du héros.

Le professeur Skarov reçoit ensuite un certain nombre de points d'action basés en partie sur les actions des héros, et il les utilise pour s'activer, activer ses serviteurs ou ses robots, ces personnages effectuant également des actions de mouvement, d'attaque ou de pouvoir spécial.

Au fur et à mesure que les joueurs atteignent (ou échouent) leurs objectifs, les journaux rapportent qui a fait quoi, et la somme de ces rapports détermine qui arrive en tête.
